Many companies still underestimate the strategic impact of their visual identity. But a logo knocked up with AI, or inconsistent guidelines, shows. And above all, it is felt.
Visual identity is often treated as an aesthetic expense: nice, but postponable. That is a category error. It is not decoration, it is the first signal of seriousness a company sends, before a single word.
What shows, and is felt
A prospect will not be able to articulate why a brand inspires trust or not. They will not say the letter-spacing is off or the palette lacks hierarchy. They will simply feel it is amateur, and go elsewhere. The judgment is immediate and rarely conscious.
The three reasons
- Visual consistency equals reinforced credibility. A clear, homogeneous identity inspires trust at first glance. Inconsistency sends the opposite message: if the company does not master its image, does it master its craft?
- Better legibility equals more attention. Typography, contrast, hierarchy: everything is designed to be seen, understood, remembered. What is not legible is not read, whatever the media budget.
- A solid base equals a brand that lasts. A good identity adapts, evolves and accompanies the company for years, instead of being redone with every new marketing lead.
A client will never tell you your letter-spacing is off. They will simply say they preferred your competitor.
Graphically anchored, flexible in use
In my work, I favour identities that are graphically anchored but flexible in use. The two do not conflict: it is precisely because the system is solid that it supports varied applications without falling apart.
The bespoke icons I design follow this logic: they guarantee uniqueness, emotion and effectiveness, whatever the medium. A stock icon library does the opposite: consistent on day one, interchangeable with three competitors' by day two.
If you have doubts about yours, the brand audit gives a factual answer in a few points.
Frequently asked questions
-
Does an AI-made logo really show?
- Yes, rarely consciously. The prospect does not articulate the technical problem, they feel the amateurism and go elsewhere.
-
When should you professionalize your image?
- Before a growth phase or a raise, never during. A solid identity is built when you have time to think it through, not under pressure.
-
Why bespoke icons?
- Because a stock library is consistent on day one and interchangeable with your competitors' by day two. Bespoke guarantees uniqueness over time.
