The Von Restorff effect: what stands out is what we remember

An isolated element standing out

In a set of similar elements, the one that stands out is the one we notice and remember. This is the Von Restorff effect, also called the isolation effect.

Described by psychiatrist Hedwig von Restorff in 1933, it explains why an element that breaks from its neighbors grabs attention and sticks in memory. Difference, not repetition, creates the memory.

The principle

In a list where a single word is highlighted, that is the one we will remember. Contrast (color, size, shape, position) acts like a spotlight. But the spotlight only works if it lights one thing.

What it implies in design

  • One dominant element. The primary action must cut through everything else, in color or weight.
  • Hierarchy is made by contrast. What matters stands out, what is secondary recedes.
  • Rarity is strength. An accent color reserved for the action keeps its full impact.

For one element to be seen, you must accept that the others are not.

The common mistake

Wanting to highlight everything: when every block shouts louder than its neighbor, nothing stands out. Three "important" buttons on one screen cancel each other. Attention is a limited budget.

In practice

Reserve your strongest color for a single thing per screen. At IDSEED, the fluo green is used only for the action: it does not decorate, it guides. That is what keeps its pulling power.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Von Restorff effect?
The tendency to better notice and remember the element that stands out from the rest. It is also called the isolation effect.
How many elements should stand out?
Ideally one per screen. The more accents you add, the more you dilute attention and weaken each of them.
How do I create contrast?
Through color, size, shape, space or position. What matters is that a single element breaks from the rest, not several.
